Three day tramp in the upper Waioeka River catchment. We will need low river levels because we walk along the stream bed of Kahunui Stream for the middle day between the huts. The huts are small, so we will carry tents, and the usual cooking and eating equipment, as well as food for three days.

Cost - $10

Contact - Stuart 06 868 5418, [email protected]

About 2 – 3 hours walk, at the upstream end of the Waimata River. Drop steeply down to the stream and then wet feet guaranteed. When we get to the cliffs, it’s a short steep uphill to complete a short but pretty loop.

February 10th & 11th: Waitangi Falls, Ruakituri Valley [M]

Leave - 7am Saturday and return Sunday evening

Cost - $25

Contact - Gillian 867 4591, [email protected]

An overnight trip, camping under flys or tents at the top of Waitangi Falls. The walk begins at Papuni Station and joins the eastern edge of Te Urewera. It takes about 4 hours each way (involving a considerable amount of climbing to the top of the falls). There is a lovely campsite with clean water to drink from the Ruakituri River. Bring tent or fly, food, gas cooker, billies, plate, bowl and spoon, sleeping bag and wet weather gear. This trip will be dependent on fairly low river levels, and good weather. We hope to replace the venetian blind track markers, which have become very indistinct.

Tuesday February 20th: Anaura Bay and Cooks Cove Walkways

Meet - 8am

Cost - $15

Contact - Bill 06 261 5037, [email protected]

The Anaura Bay Walkway track winds up through young coastal forest with abundant birdlife to an open farm paddock. Lovely views of Anaura Bay, Motuoroi Island and the coastline to the south.

The track then curves down through pine-clad valleys and turns off to follow Waipare Stream through the scenic reserve, under the shade of the dense green native bush.

Then drive to Tolaga Bay wharf and follow the Cooks Cove Walkway to Cooks Cove where Captain James Cook stopped in 1769 as part of his circumnavigation of New Zealand - with information panels, a hole-in-the-wall, and a safe cove to swim in.

Tuesday March 6th: Mangakawa track, Morere Scenic Reserve [E]

Leave - 9am

Cost - $15

Contact - Gillian 06 867 4591, [email protected]

The Mangakawa Track at Morere takes approximately 2.5hrs to walk. There are 5 stream crossings so this would need to be postponed if there had been a lot of recent rain. There are lots of steps both up & down. Lovely bush & birdsong. It is free to walk the track but $12 for a swim. We will car pool, so there would be some flexibility in whether people stay for a soak or not.

 March 11th: Whareongaonga Bay [M]

Leave - 9am

Cost - $10

Contact - Gillian 867 4591, [email protected]

Whareongaonga Bay is a spectacular place to visit and has an interesting history as well. It has been settled for a very long time with up to 130 houses in the Bay at one time. More recently it was the site of Te Kooti’s landing from the Chatham Islands in 1868, and there are the remnants of a wharf that was used for barges to transport road metal to Gisborne for constructing the Eastland Port breakwater. We follow a long downhill, then retrace our steps climbing back uphill again, mostly following a farm track.
