GIS Canoe and Tramping Club - Trips Schedule

August - October

Thursday, August 1st: Te Kuri a Paoa (Young Nicks Head) and Mapere Beach [E - M]

 Depart: 8am

Cost: $10

Contact: Gillian, 06 867 4591 or [email protected]

The walk to the trig on Te Kuri a Paoa involves a very steep climb initially, then it is up and down along the steep cliff edge - about 3 hours on this part. After this, we are planning a circuit walk on Maraetaha Station from Mapere Beach to Mapere Point, and back along the cliff tops – again about 2 - 3 hours for this section. Maraetaha River enters the sea in a different place to when we last walked here – will be interesting to see.

Sunday, August 11th: Gray’s Hill Lookout/Waipura Trig, litter collecting walk

Depart: 8.30am

Cost: $5

Contact: Gillian, 867 4591 or [email protected]

Walk from Back Ormond Road/Waimata Hill Road intersection to Gray’s Hill Lookout. From the lookout, climb to Waipura trig and return.

On recent walks we have noticed a more than usual amount of roadside rubbish and this walk will have a particular focus on picking up rubbish. Bring a bucket, and gloves.

Sunday, August 18th: Waimata River kayak [M]

Depart: 9am

Cost: $5

Contact: Gillian, 06 867 4591 or [email protected]

There is about 9km of winding river between the bridge over the Waimata River at Goodwin Road and Anzac Park, including several rapids as the river drops over papa ledges. From the “Hole in the Wall” the river is tidal, and with low tide at 2.00pm, we will paddle this section on a falling tide. Some kayaking experience is necessary – you need to be able to steer your kayak across the river to avoid obstacles and shoot the rapids, and be able to steer it to go consistently downstream in the lower section. We will only do this if the river conditions are suitable.

Sunday, August 25th: Nuhaka – Opoutama Coastal Walk

Depart: 8.30am

Cost: $20

Contact: Bill, 06 261 5037 or [email protected]

Railway line walk from old Nuhaka railway station platform to Opoutama platform. About 12km, and 4 – 5 hours walking. No tunnels but some bridges over rivers and road. Lovely sea views along the coast. We will try to organise leaving a car at the other end before starting the walk.

Thursday, August 29th: Titirangi Maunga multi-climb [M]

Depart: 9am

Cost: -

Contact: Sean,  021 255 6000 or [email protected]

A multi-summit walk on several of the Titirangi tracks, including the new “Soldiers’ Track” from Te Poho o Rawiri Marae, and the Eastland Port track to Kaiti Beach.

Sunday, September 1st (or 15th as a back-up): Tatapouri – Tuahine Point Coastal Walk [M]

Depart: 10am

Cost: $5

Contact: Gillian, 867 4591 or [email protected]

With a low tide at 1.00pm we have an opportunity for a beach walk if we start mid-morning.

Walk around Tatapouri Point, along Makorori Beach, over Makorori headland, along Wainui Beach and to the trig on Tuahine Point. We will start by leaving a vehicle at the Tuahine Point end to take car drivers back to the vehicles at Tatapouri. About 10 km of beach walking, and a climb to the trig on Tuahine Point.

Thursday, September 12th: Whinray Scenic Reserve [M]

Depart: 9am

Cost: $20

Contact: Bill, 06 261 5037 or [email protected]

Whinray Scenic Reserve is a 429ha reserve featuring original native forest and a spectacular set of waterfalls on the wild and scenic Motu River.

This trip will probably be a “there and back” walk through the scenic reserve along the old coach road, starting from Motu Falls Road picnic area beside the Motu River. From there the track crosses the swing bridge and climbs gently to Maramoko Road, passing through native forest and over numerous small streams. About 4 ½ -5 hours walking.

Sunday, September 15th: Waipaoa River – river mouth rubbish collection walk [E]

Depart: 10am

Cost: -

Contact: Barbara, 06 867 2368 or [email protected]

Meet at the Army Hall (Farmers Market car park) and car-pool to the river mouth of the Big (Waipaoa) River. This is another trip with a focus on rubbish collection. We want to reduce some of the plastic in the ocean! We could walk across the railway bridge to collect rubbish from the south side of the river as well. Bring a bucket and gloves.

Sunday, September 22nd: Cycle Ride Te Wera Road [M]

Depart: 8.30am

Cost: $15

Contact: Geoff, 06 862 5710 or [email protected]

Ride in on Te Wera Road from SH2 Junction (past Matawai), part seal, mostly unsealed. 23 km return if ride to Koranga Valley Road, which is not too demanding, but ride as far as you want. If you're really keen ride out to SH2 at Rakauroa (33 km, need pick up), though this has significantly more climbing. Please advise if you can transport bike(s) or if you need your bike to be carried for you.

Thursday, September 26th: Beach Loop, Wharerata hills [E]

Depart: 9.30am

Cost: $10

Contact: Gillian, 06 867 4591 or [email protected]
