Maunga Hikurangi is the sacred mountain of the Ngāti Porou people, and the first place in the world to see the sunrise. Gain access to our sacred maunga and sacred sites to obtain a unique authentic Māori cultural experience and sunrise.
At 1,752 m (5,748 ft) tall, Maunga Hikurangi is the highest non-volcanic peak on the North Island and the first place in the world to see the sunrise. Rising above the rural community of Ruatōria, Maunga Hikurangi is a site of cultural significance for the people of Ngāti Porou. It is believed to be the first part of Aotearoa New Zealand that emerged from the sea when Māui fished up Te Ika-a-Māui, the North Island.
Locally guided, visitors are transported by 4WD UTV to “Te Takapau-a-Māui”. A sacred site with nine Māori carvings that depict the stories of Māui, the Polynesian adventurer, famous for his legendary deeds. Visitors will learn about Māui and his stories, witness a beautiful sunrise (during Te Urunga Tu Sunrise Tour), epic mountainous views, and gain insight into the local region. A Haramai Day Tour is also available.

Cancellation of an activity within 48hrs of the activity will incur a 20% cancellation fee. Cancellation within 24hrs of activity will incur 100% cancellation fee.
