We understand that the Tairāwhiti region isn’t clear cut, and travellers who travel to our region are looking to get off the beaten track. Trade Events

We try and get out and about as much as possible showcasing our wonderful region at a range of travel trade events both on-shore and off-shore. You’ll find us, alongside our Explore Central North Island partners, at the eXplore Show (usually mid-late April) and also at TRENZ (May). Where possible, we like to join forces with Tourism New Zealand and showcase our region off-shore.

  • We are home to State Highway 35, often considered the ultimate Kiwi road trip along a spectacular coastline.
  • Unique experiences including stingray encounters, railbikes adventures, and also some of New Zealand's best surf breaks.
  • We are the third largest grape producing region in the country so you’ll find plenty of amazing wine throughout the region.
  • We have a longest wharf in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Tolaga Bay Wharf built in 1929 stretches 660 metres into the bay offering incredible views of surrounding cliffs and bay.

 Regional Tips and Tricks:

  • Air New Zealand have up to five one hour flights direct from Wellington and Auckland into Gisborne.
  • A range of rental car services available for pick-up and drop-off in Gisborne, so start or end your clients journey there taking in our stunning beaches, unique activities and relaxed nature
  • For time-poor clients, 2-3 nights in the region is ideal, either flying in or out, then continuing south to Hawke's Bay (around 3 hours) or inland via the Waioweka Gorge to Whakatāne or Rotorua (approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours).
  • For clients wanting to experience the beauty of Gisborne, 2  nights in Gisborne followed by 2 nights along the East Coast works well, finishing in Ōpōtiki or Whakatāne
  • For the ultimate East Coast experience, a 4-5 night itinerary allows time to explore the region at a relaxed pace.
